Insect Based Pet Food

With the pet food industry putting pressure on resources, insect based food is bringing a sustainable solution which may be better for pets than prime steak.

Pets are estimated to be consuming up to 20% of all meat globally.

A recent study from the University of Edinburgh estimates that it takes an area twice the size of the UK to produce the dry food eaten by the world’s cats and dogs, while the industry’s emissions would be on par with Nigeria, the Philippines and many medium-sized European countries.

However, by using insect protein, manufacturers can produce a very nutritious food while generating less carbon, using less land and water. Insects need no fertiliser or pesticides and can be fed on organic waste products and are more efficient at converting what they eat into protein.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) says some insect-based foods may be better for pets than prime steak. Some manufacturers have already started commercialising insect-based products in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, with a number of startups soon coming to market and even a big brand like Nestlé has just announced it is launching a new range of pet food made partly from insect protein.
